JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties:
Winders at B.C. Hydro do a lot more than the wiring people often associate with the electrical trade. Winders test, rewind, recondition, rebuild, replace and generally services electric motors, generators, alternators, transformers, control equipment, mobile machines and other related components. They are capable of repairing and rebuilding electrical machines, systems and equipment. Winders play a key role in the utility industry, ensuring that our critical electric machinery is maintained, producing and bringing electricity to our homes and industries.
As an apprentice in this trade you would learn to:
• Recondition and repair rotating equipment
• Check and repair stationary equipment
• Test systems and equipment
• Repair/replace defective mechanical, electrical and electronic part(s)/components
• Handle large, bulky and often heavy materials or equipment
• Learn to handle oiling of large utility reactive equipment
• Work both inside and outdoors during apprenticeship – in all weather conditions in various locations around the province
• Complete significant travel around the province (minimum of 60% of working hours)
• Work in a team environment in one of Canada´s largest utilities
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:
• Graduated from high school with the following courses: English 12, Math 11 and Physics 11.
• A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license (or higher)
• A desire to travel around the province (minimum of 60% of working hours)
• Strong interpersonal skills to deal with both internal and external customers
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude through construction experience, mechanics or exposure to trades and familiarity with industrial tools/equipment
• Good verbal and written communication skills

THE PROGRAM
• The winder apprentice program consists of 48 months of practical job training. Please note that each year, you will need to travel to Alberta for 2 months to complete your training.
• Work Schedule: Employees will work four 10-hour shifts from Monday to Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with Fridays off.
This schedule will be upheld while employees are working in town, outside of the shop environment, and is subject to operational needs.
THE FUTURE
• When you graduate, you will remain at our headquarters in Surrey and continue to travel to temporary headquarters around the province.
THE LOCATION
• During your apprenticeship, you're assigned to a regular headquarters at Construction Services in Surrey and temporary headquarters throughout the province as the jobs require. This job requires significant travel around the province. While this varies year to year it could be as much as 60% of working hours, working in all weather conditions.

• Apprentices earn 75% of the full trade rate with further increases during the apprenticeship. The Apprentice hourly rate is $35.95 and the Journeyperson hourly rate is $47.93.

• A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Class 5 BC Driver's Licence (or higher) in good standing with a clean driving record.

Flexible work model role definitions
===========================
Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time.
IBEW/Field – No option to work from home
Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office.
Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week.
Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
