About the Position
Competent Logistics Ltd. is seeking experienced and reliable Long Haul Truck Drivers to join our transportation operations. The successful candidates will operate tractor-trailer units on domestic and international long-haul routes, ensuring the safe and timely transportation of goods while complying with all applicable transportation and hours-of-service requirements.
This position requires frequent travel, extended periods on the road, and the ability to work independently as well as as part of a two-person driving team.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Operate and drive tractor-trailer units to transport freight and materials safely over long distances.
• Plan, review, and modify travel routes using GPS, navigation systems, and other electronic equipment in response to road, weather, traffic, and operational conditions.
• Travel on domestic and international routes, including frequent cross-border transportation.
• Work independently or as part of a two-driver team or convoy, depending on the assigned route.
• Safely load, secure, transport, and unload cargo while ensuring that freight remains protected throughout the journey.
• Inspect the truck, trailer, tires, lights, brakes, refrigeration equipment, and other components before departure and throughout the trip.
• Complete pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections in accordance with applicable safety requirements.
• Identify and report mechanical or safety concerns and arrange or perform routine preventive maintenance as required.
• Perform brake adjustments and other permitted minor maintenance tasks when required.
• Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, cargo details, driving hours, and other required transportation information.
• Maintain regular communication with dispatch and promptly provide updates regarding routes, deliveries, delays, traffic conditions, and other operational matters.
• Obtain and maintain required permits, customs documentation, and other paperwork for international and cross-border shipments.
• Handle and transport dangerous goods in accordance with applicable legislation, company procedures, and safety requirements.
• Use appropriate cargo securement methods, including tarping, to protect shipments and maintain cargo safety.
• Maintain the security of the vehicle, cargo, and transportation documents while in transit.
• Follow all applicable federal, provincial, and international transportation regulations, including hours-of-service and road-safety requirements.
• Complete delivery documentation and obtain required signatures or confirmations from customers and receiving locations.
• Demonstrate professional conduct when communicating with dispatchers, customers, shippers, receivers, and other transportation personnel.
Employment Requirements
Education
• Secondary (high) school graduation certificate.
Language
• English
Experience
• Previous truck-driving experience is an asset.
• Experience in long-haul and/or international transportation is an asset.
Required Licences and Certifications
• Valid Class 1 or equivalent commercial driver's licence.
• Air Brake Endorsement.
Trucking and Equipment Experience
• Tractor-trailer units.
• Refrigerated transportation equipment.
Transportation Experience
• Long-haul transportation.
• International and cross-border transportation.
Additional Requirements
• Valid and satisfactory driver's abstract.
• Ability to successfully complete a required drug and alcohol test, where applicable.
• Reliable and responsible work habits.
• Team-oriented and cooperative approach.
Working Conditions
This is an on-the-road position. Work locations may vary, and the successful candidates will be required to travel frequently or continuously as part of their regular duties. Drivers may be required to work during days, evenings, nights, weekends, and early mornings depending on route schedules and operational requirements.
Compensation and Employment Benefits
• $38.50 per hour
• 50–60 hours per week
