Primary Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Pre/Postnatal, the Pre/Postnatal Counsellor will:
• Provide counselling to Aboriginal Pre/Postnatal families.
• Coordinate and facilitate participant based pre/postnatal support groups.
• Collaborate with internal and external services to develop and implement wrap-around supports that are culturally informed, trauma informed and client centred.
• Work collaboratively with all Tikinagan services.
• Provide support to community members, on an as needed basis, for purposes such as assisting clients with attending appointments with other internal and external services.
• Provide case management supports when required and needed.
• Support families with additional referrals as required.
• Provide crisis intervention.
• Implement child development screening tools and developmental plans.
• Provide parenting support and education.
• Provide flexible, mobile and accessible supports through community visits and home visiting.
• Provide supportive counselling and work collaboratively with Child and Family Wellbeing.
• Attend case conferences when required.
• Maintain ongoing case documentation.
• Prepare and submit accurate funder and client relate

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:
• B.S.W. Degree or equivalent Degree and 2 years of relevant experience.
• Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience working within the maternal- child mental health sector.
• Strong knowledge of Infant Mental Health and Child Development, and parenting practices.
• Knowledge of Aboriginal cultures, and holistic Social Work Practices and models of care.
• Special consideration for cultural birth-year knowledge keepers.
• Experience working as a support within the Aboriginal community.
• Pass a Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check.
• Must have a valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle.
• Passionate about working with pregnant, postpartum and early parenting families.
• Experience working with perinatal loss and a strong understanding of the impacts of the child welfare system within Aboriginal communities.
• Solid counselling skills.
• Knowledge of a variety of community resources (housing, VAW, pre/post-natal care etc.)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills.
• Professionalism, initiative and respect for confidentiality.
• Demonstrated understanding, and commitment to, integrating the Native Child and Family Services of Toronto Mission and values in to practice, service and relationships.
• Demonstrated understanding of workplace Health and Safety practices and understanding of an employee’s responsibility under current legislation.
• Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, to maintain effective communication and working relationships, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, tact, sensitivity and build strong internal relationships.
